Spruce is a species that is ideal for siding, as it offers the unique charm of wood at an affordable price, as well as a wide range of board widths and lengths.
Cedars provide several advantages; they resist decay, are insect-repellent, and are highly stable. Their natural look is unique and contains a varied colour palette. White cedar is more uniform, which means that it is used with both opaque and semi-transparent coatings, while red cedar (more tannic and more nuanced) is more suitable for a semi-transparent coating, which better showcases the wood. White cedar is often chosen for green projects and contributes to LEED certification because it is sourced locally. However, its boards are shorter and narrower, given the natural characteristics of the tree.
No product or material exposed to the elements is truly maintenance-free. For example, even your car, which is made of plastic and metal, requires some regular maintenance and cleaning to ensure its longevity. The advantage of wood siding is that it is easy to maintain, unlike some synthetic materials that require replacement when damaged.
Some coatings, however, do require less maintenance than others. Contact our advisors to find out more.

As with any other type of siding, annual cleaning is recommended to remove grit and to inspect for potential repair requirements. The Maintenance guide (available in French only) lists all the best practices regarding this topic.
The recommended frequency for reapplying a stain also depends on the type of coating.
Coating frequency will vary, depending on the type of finish and coating. To ensure that your warranty remains in effect, an additional stain layer has to be applied mid-term, at least on south-facing surfaces, since they are more exposed to the sun than others.
Please note that it is harder to recreate the effect of a factory-applied two-tone coating once the siding is installed. Contact our advisors for more information.
Before applying a stain, in most cases, a simple cleaning process should be carried out to remove dirt and dust that could affect coating adhesion. No sanding is required.
Also, the durability of the coating will be significantly affected by the type of architecture, whether the installation was completed according to instructions, the solar orientation and general environment of the building (trees, shading, roof overhang, winds, waterfront, etc.)
